Poptropica

Poptropica is a massively multiplayer online game and virtual world, targeted at children ages 6 to 15, where players can travel, play games, compete in head-to-head competition, and communicate safely with each other. There is a role-playing component as players are encouraged to finish "island missions" and get medallions.
Once a player enters Poptropica, he chooses an island to explore; each island has a central mission. To travel between islands, the user boards a blimp with the Poptropica logo, which shuttles between the Main Streets of the various islands.

It’s like old European business, though now in space. This sounds pretty easy, and it is fairly simple on paper, but as you proceed in the game, the levels grow to be exceedingly difficult.

Travian

Travian is a browser game with a world full of thousands of users who all begin as the leaders of small villages. From Wesley Fryer, " There are two basic ways to expand your personal “empire” in Travian and build/obtain more villages. The first way is to build up your palace or residence (one of the buildings in each of your villages) to level 10, 15, or 20, and earn enough “culture points” to found a new village. You can found a new village either by training “settlers” who can be sent with basic resources to an unoccupied area on the virtual Travian map grid, or you can train a “chief” (in my case he is called a Senator, because I am in the Roman tribe) who can be sent repeatedly to another existing village. It is necessary to destroy the residence in the village you want to take over with your chief first, before sending the chief, and afterwards each time your chief arrives in the village he lowers the “loyalty” of that village by a percentage. When the village’s loyalty is lowered to zero, the entire village becomes yours. This entire process (which is admittedly and delightfully complex) is explained well in this official Travian tutorial, “Preventing Conquerings.”

......
This entire sequence of conversations, decisions, and actions by Alexander was a great opportunity to see him practice problem solving and mathematical calculations in a relevant, meaningful context. Too often in school, we are teaching skills “just in case” instead of “just in time.” Alexander is using his math skills and learning new ones in Travian, as well as further developing his problem solving skills, to accomplish tangible objectives he really cares about.
It is exciting to be learning and playing together in Travian, and to witness how online games like Travian can help young students develop a rich repertoire of skills– including mathematical abilities!"

TypeRacer

is another game to play in order to practice typing skills. No registration is required, and you can compete against yourself or others by a race car that moves fast or slow depending on the speed of your typing. It shows your errors, and you can continue until you fix it.
It uses quotes from movies so you may have to keep an eye out for the appropriateness of them. They all seemed okay when I had a go but please let me know if you think they are inappropriate and I will remove this link.

Spywatch

is a neat game – again from the BBC. In it, the player has to discover who is the spy working in Great Britain during World War II.
There’s a fair amount of reading involved, though it’s simple language and laid-out well. Early Intermediate English Language Learners would find it a challenge, but should be able to play it.

The Arcade Wire™: Airport Security

They say the front line of the War on Terror is the airport security line. See if you’ve got what it takes to keep airline travel safe in this hysterical game of airport security. Better not let that tube of toothpaste get through your checkpoint — it could be a terrorist’s weapon against freedom (or maybe it just fights gingivitis)!

Contagion

Dr. Jennifer Jenson and Dr. Suzanne de Castell had developed an online game called “Contagion” which teacher 9-13 year olds how to avoid contagious diseases such as West Nile, HIV/AIDS and SARS. You can view the game here. The trailer looks awesome, but it was the only bit of 3D animation that I could see in the game from what I had played.
You need to give your email address to play this but the game is from a university site. It could be worth looking at.

Scratch

Here’s some examples of what you can do!

Stop Disaster game

which allows pupils to experience the issues at stake to limit the impact of natural disasters: earthquakes, wildfire, floods, tsunami, hurricanes. The game comes out of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction and the United Nations, and encourages kids to think ahead and plan ways in to limit the damage that might be caused. If they get it wrong, they see the consequences. If they put so many defences in that tourism gets damaged, though, then this will not exactly be a win-win, either. So students are forced to think not in ‘ideal world’ terms but in quite realistic terms of economic reality versus potential for disaster. Along the way the player wins extra information about how to best prepare, covering many themes that fit into the social subjects and environmental science.
Above all, it’s quite good fun and a race against the clock to save the world. All in a day’s work for a 21st Century kid!

Jigsaw Planet is a site that makes it simple to create custom jigsaw puzzles. Just upload a jpeg image to the site, choose how many pieces you want, what shape you want the pieces to be and Jigsaw Planet does the rest. You instantly have a custom interactive puzzle for your students to play!
Jigsaw Planet puzzles are AMAZING to use with an interactive whiteboard! Each puzzle is timed as you put it together, split students into teams to see which team can complete the puzzle the fastest. Instead of the typical PowerPoint type presentation to teach students facts, create a puzzle for them to put together and have them read the fact once the puzzle has been completed. Turn your classroom rules into a series of jigsaw puzzles for students to put together. Honor your star student of the week by creating a puzzle of that student, just take a picture of the student and upload to Jigsaw Planet. Put the puzzle of the student on your classroom website to honor them. Students can use Jigsaw Planet to create their own puzzles. This is a great place for them to study, they can upload spelling words, math facts, maps, etc. Students will love creating their own jigsaw puzzles, if they have their own blog or website they can embed the puzzles right into their online space. If you have a projector or an interactive whiteboard, have students create a puzzle all about them. They can create a collage of things they like in a presentation program, take a screen shot of it, and upload the puzzle to Jigsaw Planet. Students can put together each other’s puzzles and guess who the student is based on the pictures. This would be a great getting to know you activity!
